Biography

Lisa Bonanni focuses her practice on commercial property, casualty and construction insurance coverage litigation. With ample experience handling coverage matters from inception to trial, Lisa has secured favorable outcomes for insurers at courts in all five of New York City’s boroughs, Long Island and surrounding jurisdictions in New York State. Through friendly, informed discourse and enthusiastic advocacy, she provides her clients with peace of mind as a claim proceeds through litigation.

Lisa calls upon her extensive litigation experience as she aids insurers in claims analysis. She carefully reviews policies and provides detailed coverage opinions on complex coverage issues that include covered causes of loss, reasonable period of restoration, business interruption, pollution coverage or exclusions, water damage coverage or exclusions, failure to maintain exclusions and conditions in the event of loss. Lisa also advises insurers on issues of coverage as to additional insureds in both pursuing and defending against declaratory matters.

Lisa’s prior experience handling general litigation matters helped her develop a balanced and successful insurance coverage practice. After law school, she became proficient in defending insurers and their insureds, as well as municipal agencies, in negligence and personal injury matters involving motor vehicle accidents and premises liability. She also handled matters involving issues of companies in the business of leasing and renting vehicles as well as no-fault litigation. Through this experience she honed her abilities to take and defend depositions, draft and argue motions, research cutting-edge legal issues, conference with adversaries, draft appeals and prepare matters for trial.

Since leading her mock trial team in high school, Lisa has been passionate about advocating for clients and competitive in seeking the best results. At SUNY Geneseo, she competed on the college’s cross country and track teams and graduated cum laude with a degree in English and a minor in Legal Studies. The skills and tough mentality Lisa developed at Geneseo fueled her success at St. John’s Law School, where she competed as a member of the Polestino Trial Advocacy Institute (PTAI) Mock Trial team in internal competitions and ultimately led her team to win the Charles M. Sparacio Criminal Mock Trial Competition in 2011. At St. John’s, Lisa focused her curriculum on advocacy while handling externships with Nassau Suffolk Law Services, Judge Scott Fairgrieve of Nassau County’s District Court, and the District Attorney Offices of both Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Lisa also was a student attorney and later law clerk for St. John’s Child Advocacy Clinic, representing children in neglect and abuse matters at Queens Family Court.

Lisa remains an avid runner. She is an active member of the Greater Long Island Running Club (GLIRC) and its racing team, Fast Feet. Lisa volunteers at numerous races throughout Long Island, including the Marcum Workplace Challenge. Most of the races Lisa volunteers and races at support local charities and not-for-profit organizations. She enjoys being able to give back to the Long Island community doing something she loves. In her free time, Lisa also enjoys singing karaoke with her family and friends, attending rock concerts and playing digital and paper strategy card games.

Representative Matters

  • Defended commercial general liability insurer in coverage dispute with insurers for owner and general contractor regarding potential additional insured coverage with respect to liability for accident involving a subcontractor’s employee.
  • Represented commercial general liability insurer seeking additional insured coverage for its general contractor insured facing a subcontractor’s employee’s construction site injury suit.
  • Defended commercial general liability insurer in dispute over coverage for owner as additional insured against our insured general contractor for non-employee construction site injury suit resulting from possible negligence of another general contractor and mutual subcontractor.
  • Defended commercial property insurer in dispute over property damage coverage where insured premises were allegedly damaged by Hurricane Sandy flood waters and storm surge. There were issues as to failure to maintain and as to overblown damage estimates. Insured also sought damages against broker and bad faith against insurer. After successful summary judgment motion, bad faith was dismissed and insured’s claim was limited due to policy condition requiring NFIP coverage for first $500,000 in damages, thus no coverage for first $500,000 for a claim assessed by insurer to by less than that amount. Also had successful appellate motion and argument overturning lower court on issue of privileged attorney reports to insurer client.
  • Defended commercial property insurer in coverage dispute with two related insureds over alleged vandalism damage to two old vacant properties. Handled issues of potential material misrepresentations made by insureds both in underwriting and in the claim, as well as damage resulting from theft which was excluded under the policy and failure to secure property/cooperate with insurer. Insureds also sought bad faith damages for client’s denial of claim. Coordinated with multiple independent adjustors and building expert to secure favorable reports, deposition testimony and later trial testimony. Prepared matter for lengthy jury trial which resulted in a verdict less than 5% of monies sought by insured. Also, successful motion for directed verdict dismissing bad faith.
  • Represented commercial property insurer in declaratory judgment action against insured who was defendant in personal injury premises liability action. Insurer sought rescission of the policy issued due to material misrepresentations made by insured in application. Insured stated in application that no renovations, demolition or construction was contemplated at time of insurance application; however, investigation into incident and later litigation revealed extensive renovations were considered prior to application.
